Call me a geezer, but I’m developing a sort of technology resistance.
Specifically, to Blu-Ray players. I don’t own a Blu-Ray player and I don’t ever intend to.
I don’t think they are any higher quality of movies. In fact, I think watching a movie on a Blu-Ray player makes a movie seem a lower quality. The characters all seem like paper dolls, and everything seems so unrealistic.
Am I the only one that hasn’t drunk the Blu-Ray Kool-Aid? Or does anyone else feel like Blu-Ray is kind of a sham?
P.S. – I’m not a factoid repeater. This is different from Random Factoid #69.

I’m guilty of drinking the “Blu-Ray Kool Aid” and made the transition from DVD to Blu-Ray. Blu-ray does look a lot better in my opinion compared to DVDs, but it all depends on your set-up at home. However I’m fully aware that Blu-Ray will probably not even have the same lifespan as DVD since I truly believe the final frontier is coming, which is Digitial Distribution (if not already).
I do love digital distribution. I’m addicted to my Apple TV and iTunes rentals.
DVD might go the way of the VHS tape. We might not have a choice pretty soon.
I was pretty skeptical ’til I got a PS3, now I try to watch as many films in BD over DVD when possible. As Dreher mentioned, it’s all about your set up though.
In saying that not all BDs are great, some transfers are from Standard Definition material or just generally botched – makes for a good gamble every time you’re faced with a £5 DVD or £18 BD!
I’ll admit, I’m curious to see a few BD movies in a good setup. “The Dark Knight” and “Benjamin Button,” just to name a few.
The best one’s I’ve seen so far are Kill Bill 2 (detail), 2001: A Space Odyssey (knock-out sound) and Inglorious Basterds. Watchmen is probably the most marvelous to behold!

Apparently Ben Button’s also a killer disc!
